Desire Lines
multiple media, in progress 2025
Picture
Who In All The Land, single channel video, 15 min., 2024
Inspired by a church built in the shape of a high-heeled shoe in the oyster-farming Taiwanese town of Budai, Knox’s series Desire Lines (in progress) traces the Cinderella myth to its ancient Asiatic origins.

Who In All The Land is a performance video in which the artist tries to fit as many fresh oysters as possible into a stiletto shoe. How many of these fleshy beings, shucked by local women, will fit into the controlling slipper? This method of choosing a princess sits in the cultural imagination so deeply it spans Europe, Asia, the Americas and beyond. The artist’s action refutes of the trope of the singular, perfectly demure princess who must be chosen by a man because she fits exactly into a social mould.
